In memory of Prof. E.F Lan, a determined and dedicated pathfinder for arbitration law

CAAI is immensely saddened by the passing of Professor E. F. Lan, a member of CAAI Court of Arbitration, on May 3, 2020. Prof. Lan was a highly respected and excellent legal professional who made significant contributions to the field of arbitration, interlinking domestic and international arbitration practices while paving the way for Taiwan’s arbitration reforms.

Prof. Lan received Doctorat en Droit from the Université Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas in 1974, specialising in civil and commercial law. His works through decades of devotion to the comparative developments of arbitration-related laws, research and practice have led to significant legal and practical reforms in Taiwan. In recognition of his role in legal education and his wealth of experience in domestic and international arbitration, Prof. Lan has been listed in “The International Who's Who of Commercial Arbitrators” in both 1999 and 2001.

Prof. Lan has continuously and industriously contributed to CAA’s publications since 1978, providing readers with abundant resources and insights over the past forty decades. His book Comparative Arbitration Law (2018) covering jurisprudential and practical issues in arbitration has been especially praised and highly acclaimed in the legal profession and academe.

Prof. Lan is and will always be highly respected and remembered for humility, civility and integrity, as well as his diligence, resilience and brilliance. His endless passion for learning and timeless positivity about life will continue to be inspirational to others.

As described by Wu Chi-bin, the late President of the Supreme Court of Taiwan, in the preface of Prof. Lan’s book Comparative Arbitration Law, Prof. Lan is “a silent scholarly lawyer vested with the vast sea of knowledge”.

In paying tribute Prof. Lan’s lifelong dedication and legendary contribution to arbitration, our hearts and deepest condolences are with his family, friends and colleagues. We will forever remember Prof. Lan not only as our teacher, but also as our friend and colleague.
